A Message from the President

Dear BHS Members and Friends,

I am sitting on a shady verandah in the Australian Outback watching the sun set with Jeff, the tutor of the two boys who live here at Bullo River Station. Bullo is a 500,000 acre cattle ranch at the farthest reaches of Australia's Northern Territory, and I am here with my family on vacation. Jeff is fascinated by my description of Beacon Hill Seminars. Here in the Outback, people learn in isolation -- with lessons and news arriving on the mail plane each Friday (weather permitting). The concept of teaching and learning in a communal way is an impossibility here, and Jeff tells me how incredibly lucky I am to be part of such an institution. He is particularly intrigued by my description of Linda Berger's courses on pioneer women as he sees parallels with Australia's early settlers, a legacy that continues with the gutsy women who run some of this country's ranches today.

While our summer break has scattered us throughout the world, BHS beckons in the fall to bring us back together again. I know I will return with a heightened sense of appreciation of our community of shared knowledge and experience. BHS has a terrific line up of fall courses. We look forward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting and Kick Off event on September 13 at 5:30 at King's Chapel House (64 Beacon Street).

Happy summer and safe travels.

Sincerely,
Sharon Malt
