We will read aloud four of the Greek tragedies that will be covered in Charles Dickinson’s course “Eight Greek Tragedies.” If time allows, we will discuss the plays briefly. We will read the plays in the following order:
Aeschylus’s Agamemnon
Aeschylus’s Libation Bearers
Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex
Sophocles’ Antigone
For the plays by Aeschylus, please obtain “Aeschylus I –
Oresteia,” translated and with an introduction by Richard Lattimore,
University of Chicago Press, 1953.
For the plays by Sophocles, please obtain “Sophocles I” (which includes Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonus and Antigone) translated by David Grene, edited by Grene and Richard Lattimore, University of Chicago, 1991.
It is important that everyone has the exact same script. If you already own these plays or plan on getting them at the library, please be sure they are the translations and years above. Otherwise, scripts will be held at Borders Bookstore, 10-24 School Street in Boston. Please have your script before coming to class.
