Prescott House, 55 Beacon Street

Camelot, King Arthur, Guinevere, Merlin, Lancelot, Knights of the Roundtable, how the very names still conjure up visions of manly valor, honor, chivalry, might in the service of right, and, above all, romance long after they have all turned to dust. That is, if they ever truly existed. We will explore the development of the legend of Britain and Arthur starting with the movie Camelot, then reaching back to the fall of Troy and Brutus’ arrival in Albion, Britain as a Roman outpost, Vortigern and the Saxon invasions, and the Welsh poems memorializing Arthur and his twelve major battles against a pagan and rapacious invader. Texts for the course are Geoffrey of Monmouth’s History Of British Kings and Geoffrey Ashe’s In Search of King Arthur.
